Summer 2010 Art Camp at Lord of the Light Art Studio & Gallery in Almaden Valley

[photo: lord of the light art studio & gallery] Lord of the Light Art Studio & Gallery (Yelp Listing) teaches students the fundamentals of fine art. The studio has a unique curriculum that is designed to bring out and develop a student’s imagination and creativity.

The Summer Art Camp is a two-week, fun-filled learning experience that includes art history, color theory, origami, animation, and much more. Students also learn pencil drawing skills and how to use medias such as oil pastel, soft pastel, charcoal, and watercolor.

Summer Art Camp will help your child experience new freedom and give your child a new love for art. The camp is for kids in 1st – 7th grade.

The tuition is $260 per student, per session. Fifteen percent of all tuition collected for the 2010 Summer Art Camp will be donated to each of the San Jose Unified School District schools the students are attending.

Teen Talent Show 2010 Finale in Almaden Valley

[logo: teen talent show] Winners of the regional Teen Talent Show tournaments will by in Almaden Valley to show off their unique talents and compete in the 2010 Teen Talent Show Finale. Come and enjoy the remarkable talent of our local teens.

The regional tournaments are being held at six San Jose branch library locations on Saturday, May 1, 2010, 2-4pm. Prizes will be awarded to 1st – 3rd place winners at the regional events.

The first and second place winners from each of the regional tournaments will participate in a final competition at the Almaden Branch Library on Saturday, May 15, 2010, 3-5pm. Winners of the finale will win even bigger prizes!

You can pick up a registration packet at any library. You must submit the registration form to the tournament location you plan to compete at. Spaces are limited, so sign up today!

Presentation by Peter Contini, MD: Common Adolescent Injuries and Their Prevention

GameBreaker Lacrosse Camp at Leland High School in Almaden Valley

[photo: lacrosse teens] GameBreaker Lacrosse Camps is holding a Lacrosse Summer Camp in Almaden Valley. The GameBreaker Lacrosse Camps are considered the finest in the country because of the coaching staff, which consists of the best coaches and players in the world today.

The lacrosse camp in Almaden Valley will be directed by Drew Virk, a former MLL San Francisco Dragon, NLL San Jose Stealth, and current Stanford University Head Coach.

The camp also feature ten skills clinics to develop all facets of each player’s game. Players will improve their stick, shooting, and defensive skills, as well as develop a greater understanding of team play – all in a fun and positive atmosphere.

To maximize improvement all campers are grouped by age and ability after individual evaluations. The camp is for athletes ages 8-18, from beginner skill level to top high school players.

The camp is at Leland High School in Almaden Valley, July 19-22, 2010, 9am-3pm daily. The camp price is $345 per player. You can

Teen Break Away Summer Camp for Almaden Valley Teens

  • Monday: Team Building and Swimming
  • Tuesday: Laser Quest and Rock Climbing
  • Wednesday: SF Zoo
  • Thursday: Six Flags Discovery Kingdom
  • Friday: Movie and Nickel City

The registration fee includes admission, transportation (via San Jose vehicles, City Transit, or Charter Bus), and supervision (1 adult supervisor to 7 teens). Each participant must bring their own spending money and lunch.

Each day Teen Break Away will depart from and return to the Almaden Community Center. You can chose from any of the following six camp sessions: 6/21 – 6/25/2010, 6/28 – 7/2/2010, 7/6 – 7/9/2010, 7/19 – 7/23/2010, 7/26 – 7/30/2010, and 8/2 – 8/6/2010. Each day (Mon-Fri) camp begins at 9am and ends at 5pm. Price is $254 for residents and $258 for non-residents.

2010 Almaden Times Classic: 10K Run, 2-Mile Run, or 2-Mile Walk

Run or walk in the 18th Annual / 2010 Almaden Times Classic. Events include 10K and 2-mile timed runs, and a 2-mile walk. Proceeds benefit Almaden Valley Counseling Service. The race will take you on a beautiful paved creek trail and through some residential streets in Almaden Valley.

Awards will be given to the top three winners in each age division. Overall male and female winners in the 10K and 2-mile timed runs will also receive a gift certificate. All children will receive a ribbon. Age divisions include: 6 and under, 7-9, 10-13, 14-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+.

Your entry fee includes a t-shirt, goodie bag, food, and beverages. Random prizes will also be handed out to participants based on race number (must be present to win). Pick up your bib number and t-shirt on race day.

The start and finish lines are at the parking lot of Leland High School in Almaden Valley. The event is Sunday, September 26, 2010 at 9am. Check-in is at 8am.

If you register online by September 22, 2010, the entry fee is $25 per adult/teen, $13 per child (12 and under), and $60 per family of four (including parents and children). If you register on race day, the fees go up to $30 per adult/teen, $15 per child, and $70 per family. Race day registration begins at 7:30am.

Positive Parenting Classes in Almaden Valley – Spring 2010

Almaden Valley Counseling Service (logo)Are you ready to STEP up to the challenge of parenting?

If so, join a seven-week parenting class based on the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) model. Classes are for the parents of pre-school age, school age, and teenage children.

You will learn how to:

  • Build self-esteem and responsibility
  • Talk so children will listen and listen so children will talk
  • Implement discipline vs. punishment
  • Resolve conflicts so everyone wins

Classes are being held at the Almaden Valley Counseling Service agency. Classes begin April 29, 2010 and end June 10, 2010. Class is one night per week for seven weeks from 7:15pm to 9:15pm. The price is $125 per person or $175 per couple, including all materials.

History Hike in Almaden Quicksilver County Park – May 22 and July 10, 2010

The Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum and New Almaden Quicksilver County Park Association is holding a History Hike in the Almaden Quicksilver County Park.

The hike will be informative and entertaining, and a great way to get outdoors for some exercise and to enjoy the beauty of the New Almaden Quicksilver County Park.

On this hike you will step back in time and learn what it was like to be a quicksilver (i.e., mercury) miner in New Almaden in the mining heyday of the mid nineteenth century. You will ride by van up into the park and then go on a 5-mile hike to various historic sites and stop to have lunch in the park.

Bring a brown-bag lunch, water, sturdy hiking shoes, and sun protection. The tour is $7 per person. Reservations are required. For more information call the Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum at 408-323-1107.

Meet at the Almaden Quicksilver County Park Hacienda Parking Lot Entrance, which is located at the south end of New Almaden (directions). The History Hike is being held on two different days. The first is Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 9am to 1:30pm. The second is Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 9am to 1:30pm.

Almaden Little League Baseball – Senior Division Sign Ups for the 2010 Season

Almaden Little LeagueSign up for the Almaden Little League Senior Division 2010 Season. The Senior Division is for teens ages 15 and 16. The Senior Division baseball season begins mid May, after the high school baseball season ends.

The price is $225 per player. Registration is at Amato Pizzeria on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 from 7-8pm. More information about Almaden Little League.

Castillero Middle School’s 12th Annual Big Band Dance Concert

Castillero Middle School’s 12th Annual Big Band Dance ConcertCastillero Middle School is holding it’s 12th Annual Big Band Dance concert. The adult only event features live music by FreeFahlen, performances by Castillero’s jazz bands, dancing, dessert, raffle drawing, and silent auction.
