Positive Parenting Classes in Almaden Valley – Spring 2010

Almaden Valley Counseling Service (logo)Are you ready to STEP up to the challenge of parenting?

If so, join a seven-week parenting class based on the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) model. Classes are for the parents of pre-school age, school age, and teenage children.

You will learn how to:

  • Build self-esteem and responsibility
  • Talk so children will listen and listen so children will talk
  • Implement discipline vs. punishment
  • Resolve conflicts so everyone wins

Classes are being held at the Almaden Valley Counseling Service agency. Classes begin April 29, 2010 and end June 10, 2010. Class is one night per week for seven weeks from 7:15pm to 9:15pm. The price is $125 per person or $175 per couple, including all materials.

Swim Lessons at Almaden Cabana Club – Spring 2010

Spring Swim Lessons are back at the Almaden Cabana Club! The club offers small group lessons for children ranging from beginners learning to blow bubbles and put their faces in the water to competitive swimmers looking to refine their swimming strokes, diving, and flip turns.

Lessons are open to members and non-members. There are four lessons on Saturdays, from April 24 through May 15, 2010. Each lesson is 30 minutes. You can choose from the following times: 10am, 10:30am, 11am, and 11:30am. The price is only $35 for members and $45 for non-members.

All you need to do is complete the swim lesson sign-up form and drop it off along with your payment in the mailbox on the front gate of the Almaden Cabana Club. We look forward to seeing you at the pool!

Fundraiser for San Jose Jazz at UNWINED in Almaden Valley

San Jose Jazz (Logo)Come support San Jose Jazz, a 22 year old public benefit organization dedicated to promoting jazz music through performance and education. San Jose Jazz finds itself short on funding this year and may not survive long enough to put on this year’s San Jose Jazz Festival.

If you have attended any of the more than 200 weekly Jazz performances at UNWINED, please consider purchasing a ticket to this event to help support this very worthy cause. An “All-Star” Jazz band will be performing. Tickets are $30 per person and include wine tasting and light appetizers.

Gardening Course in Almaden Valley: Growing Fruit Trees & Berries

Master Gardeners Santa Clara County LogoAttend Growing Fruit Trees & Berries presented by the Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County. This four-week course stresses how good garden practices such as efficient watering, managing garden pests, and use of organic fertilizers and soil amendments apply to growing healthy fruits and berries.

Topics that will be covered include gardening basic requirements for specific fruits and berries, recommended varieties, and pruning techniques. Apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, plums, citrus, and a variety of berries will be covered.

The course is being held at the Almaden Community Center every Saturday beginning April 17, 2010 and ending May 8, 2010, from 10am-12pm. The price is $45 for residents and $49 for non-residents.

Living with Wildlife Hike in Almaden Quicksilver County Park – July 10, 2010

Join the New Almaden Quicksilver County Park Association for its Living With Wildlife Hike in the Almaden Quicksilver County Park. You will learn about Almaden’s mountain lion, bobcat, and coyote neighbors, and how they depend on the park and humans to survive.

This is a 2.6-mile moderate/strenuous hike (small children not advised due to some steep trail sections). Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water and sun protection.

Meet at the Almaden Quicksilver County Park Hacienda Parking Lot Entrance, which is located at the south end of New Almaden (directions). The Living with Wildlife Hike is being held Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 10am to 12pm.

History Hike in Almaden Quicksilver County Park – May 22 and July 10, 2010

The Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum and New Almaden Quicksilver County Park Association is holding a History Hike in the Almaden Quicksilver County Park.

The hike will be informative and entertaining, and a great way to get outdoors for some exercise and to enjoy the beauty of the New Almaden Quicksilver County Park.

On this hike you will step back in time and learn what it was like to be a quicksilver (i.e., mercury) miner in New Almaden in the mining heyday of the mid nineteenth century. You will ride by van up into the park and then go on a 5-mile hike to various historic sites and stop to have lunch in the park.

Bring a brown-bag lunch, water, sturdy hiking shoes, and sun protection. The tour is $7 per person. Reservations are required. For more information call the Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum at 408-323-1107.

Meet at the Almaden Quicksilver County Park Hacienda Parking Lot Entrance, which is located at the south end of New Almaden (directions). The History Hike is being held on two different days. The first is Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 9am to 1:30pm. The second is Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 9am to 1:30pm.

Boys and Girls Lacrosse Summer Camps in Almaden Valley

Skyhawks SportsDoes your child love lacrosse? Would they like to work on their skills and bring their game to the next level? If so, Skyhawks Sports is holding boys and girls lacrosse Summer camps in Almaden Valley.

The camp is geared towards kids ages 7 to 12 years old. Each camp includes skill drills, games, and scrimmages. Athletes will learn the fundamentals of stick handling, cradling, passing, and shooting – all in a fun, non-checking environment. Athletes will come away with a deep understanding of the game and its traditions.

LacrosseIn addition to providing health and fitness benefits, participating in Summer lacrosse camp builds self-esteem, respect for others, and teamwork skills. The participant-to-coach ratio is approx 12:1.
